It is unfortunate that throughout the years’ people (flesh & blood) are cast-out/ostracised for being different from what society considers normal. Africa is a continent rooted in traditions that shape families and determine how people react under pressure.

The Balance is a story of hope about a young African Woman who struggles with her thoughts about her purpose in life. She eventually gets diagnosed with a mental illness and this diagnosis adds on to the battle that she faces on a daily basis. The book offers the reader an opportunity to experience life through the thoughts of Precious Siphokazi Xego. Through reading the book you stumble upon the chaotic fusion of talent, beauty, depression, mania, insecurities, condemnation that goes on in her mind and in the process of accepting her condition she finds strength, love and hope. The book is written especially for the African ‘child’ diagnosed with any type of mental illness whose struggling to come to terms with the diagnosis. I would encourage all African/black people to read the book because it will empower a person with the necessary knowledge that will be handy if ever someone you know is diagnosed with a mental illness.
