Many individuals suffering from depression, anxiety or melancholia cannot afford conventional psychological treatment. Yet, their problems are not going away on their own. For these people, online therapy might just be a viable and effective treatment option.
Many individuals suffering from depression, melancholia, phobias or anxiety cannot afford conventional psychological treatment, cannot access treatment or do not wish to go. Yet, their problems are not going away on their own. For these people, online therapy, conducted via chat, Skype, messenger, or email, might just be a viable and effective treatment option.
What is online therapy?
Online therapy is just like regular therapy, but without leaving your house. In those specialized sites of online therapy you can research psychological conditions, ask for consultations, check schedules for available appointments and even review the therapists’ professional experience.
How does online therapy work?
This is therapy intended to solve a particular mental or emotional problem. Online therapy cannot be used to treat conditions like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, nor can drugs be prescribed. It is intended to help patients to solve a precise problem or to manage a particular crisis.
Although there are no stipulated time limits—because that varies according to the patient and therapist—online therapy is usually brief, rarely lasting more than 20 sessions.
The system is very simple. As you would do when looking for a traditional therapist, you research information about available practitioners and check with your insurance company for coverage and copays. Also, make sure the therapist you have selected, accepts your particular insurance company.
It’s also important to check the website and therapist credentials. This is easy enough to do—request the therapist’s license number and the name of the university that granted the degree. Then double check the public licensee records in the state to look for complaints, delinquent accounts and status of license.
In order to begin with the therapy, the first step is to complete a form with some personal data. Immediately afterwards, the therapist will analyze the case, and will contact you. Costs vary, but $40 per session is the average. Payment can be made by bank transference, PayPal or Western Union, or through your insurance company.

Advantages of online therapy
1. The internet allows people to feel freer to discuss things they might not be able to discuss in person.
2. A person with depression, phobias, fear, or anxieties may not have the energy to leave the house. Online therapy is very useful under these circumstances.
3. People with full time agendas whose work schedules are not compatible with the hours of the doctor’s offices are a perfect match for this kind of therapy.
4. Online therapy offers access to mental health information to people in rural or remote areas.
Treatment phases of online therapy
1. Evaluation: After hiring the service you will set a date and hour for the first session. There the therapist will ask for the necessary information to understand and evaluate the problem. Once all the collected info is studied, the therapist will do a functional analysis of the problem and offer an explanation that helps you understand your current feelings or condition.
2. Treatment: Once the therapeutic objectives have been decided, your doctor will inform you about the techniques to achieve them and the treatment itself begins.
3. Control: Once the desired changes have taken place, the patient moves into a maintenance phase, so that he or she can use the new resources and psychological tools in daily life. At this point, sessions are much less frequent.
Who is and who is not a proper candidate for online therapy
Online therapy is not recommended for everyone. A psychosis cannot be taken care of with online therapy. Drug addiction, suicide, hallucinations or even medicated patients need traditional, face-to-face therapy.
For people suffering from minor depression, anxiety, panic attacks, sexual dissatisfaction, couples problems or phobias, online therapy can be a valid tool and an option well-worth exploring.
